How Roman Numerals Work
Roman numerals use 7 base symbols (I, V, X, L, C, D, M) combined with additive and subtractive rules:
Additive rule
When a smaller (or equal) symbol follows a larger one, their values are added. VIII = 5+1+1+1 = 8.
Subtractive rule
When a smaller symbol precedes a larger one, it is subtracted. IV = 5−1 = 4, CM = 1000−100 = 900. Subtractive pairs are limited: I can precede V and X; X can precede L and C; C can precede D and M.
Repetition rule
I, X, C, and M can repeat up to 3 times consecutively. V, L, and D cannot repeat. So MMMCMXCIX (3999) is the largest standard Roman numeral.
Validity rules this converter enforces
- No symbol repeats more than 3× in a row (VV, LL, DD, etc. are invalid)
- Only standard subtractive pairs are accepted (not IC, XM, etc.)
- Input characters must be I, V, X, L, C, D, or M only
- The numeral must represent a value between 1 and 3999
